On October 4, we left Sausalito for our passage to Mexico. We’ll have more stories to share along the way, but in the meantime, here’s a few photos of what we’ve seen so far.
We transited the Golden Gate on a sunny, warm, clear—and windless—day.
We anchored in Half Moon Bay to catch our breath and let the cats recover from their first ever ocean passage. Chase, a connoisseur of cabinets and closets, found his perfect sailing spot right away. Guinny, however, was nervous, puked, and did not find her sea legs on this trip. But we got a lot of ideas to make her more comfortable and are happy to report dramatic improvement by day two. And both cats forgot what happened within five minutes of setting the anchor.
The next morning, we woke up to this view. We waited a couple hours to see if it would burn off, but the fog barely budged.
We decided to leave anyway.
Most of the day looked like this.
But in the afternoon, we got a few hours of this. It was glorious!
Our next stop was Monterey. We tied up at Breakwater Cove Marina, which is inside the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. We’ve seen and heard some incredible marine life, including these jellyfish.
And these sea lions, which are cool but LOUD.
Understandably, Chase was nervous.
We also spotted this adorable baby sea otter, which set up camp in a rental kayak near the marina entrance.
The offshore forecast is not favorable for the next couple of days, so we decided to put safety first and stay here (in Monterey) until Monday or Tuesday.

Long time listener, first time caller here: Couldn’t have asked for a better “first posting” — you are a lyrical writer my dear….appears John is not the only author in the family. That otter in the kayak made my whole day. Keep ’em coming!
Thanks Shara! I’ll get a lot of practice on this blog! The sea otter made our day too, it was pretty much the most adorable thing ever. On our way into the harbor another sea otter greeting us, but we were too busy preparing to dock to take a photo, so this made up for it 🙂
From fog to friendly sea lions, your adventure frees even the most desolate memories to open conciousness of vast richness of experience. Your watery passes conjure the sound of ancient music. Will be watching, following with glee
Watch out for those jellies in Monterey, wouldn’t want to get any sucked into raw water intake. I was there 2 days ago and have exact same picture!
Great to see this! Fair winds to you guys!
Happy travels! If you meet Commodore Betsy at MPYC, say hi!
What an awesome intro! And dear Chase could be Taz’s twin!!! The further aft their sailing cubbies the better! (Soon they will own the captain’s berth…..)
Wonderful first post and my heart sings for the journey you are beginning!
Safe travels, we are watching it all from the other coast. Peace and Love, Debbi and your dad
