In July we took our runabout (a 2001 Sport Nautique) up the Sacramento River for a weekend in Old Sacramento. We stayed on the Delta King, a restored riverboat that now serves as a hotel.
What really captured my imagination was the Delta King’s original itinerary between Sacramento and San Francisco. Both directions were overnight service, like a proper red-eye flight. Passengers would board in the evening, enjoy dinner, cocktails, and entertainment after getting underway, then retire to their staterooms for the night. Following arrival at 5:30am, passengers could rise at their leisure and sit for breakfast, which was available until 9am.
Today’s trip from San Francisco to Sacramento is two hours by car. I’d rather make the trip in 14 delightful hours on the Delta King.
